Press Release - Mito vs. Myth

El Nopal Press is proud to present "Mito vs. Myth," an exhibition of recent work by Rubén Ortiz Torres and John Valadez, two of the most influential artists in California.

Both artists have exhibited throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe. They have exhibited together in various group exhibitions, including "Distant Relations," "Road to Aztlán," "Cinco Continentes/Five Continents," and "Aqui y Allá" among others.

"Mito vs. Myth" brings together these great artists for the first time in a two-person show with the purpose of furthering a cross-cultural conversation.

Cross-cultural representations (cross-cultural dynamics) is one of the fertile grounds both artists inhabit and employ for dismantling and constructing cultural myths.

For many years Rubén Ortiz Torres has been operating somewhere between the realms of popular and unpopular culture exploring the construction of myth and subtext.

Throughout his career John Valadez has subverted and expanded the sociopolitical demands of his generation by deferring to a sexual and instinctive force as the source of human intentions.

This exhibition promises to be one of the most exciting events of 2004.

Opening: 15 May 2004, 6-9 pm. 424 Bamboo Lane, Chinatown/Los Angeles. Gallery hours by appointment only. (323) 581-7112 or (213) 687-4004
